Losing Weight After Pregnancy: 6 Tips to Help You Lose Weight After Having a Baby

For some women, it’s easy to maintain the healthy pregnancy weight gain. Then, they just follow the recommendation to “eat in moderation” and somehow manage to lose weight after pregnancy quickly.

For others – it’s not easy at all.

For me – for the first few months, it seemed like a “mission impossible”.

But then, once I started feeling better and getting more sleep, I lost all of the baby weight quickly by following some of these tips.

6 Tips for Losing Weight After Pregnancy

1. Breast-feeding is best for your baby, and it turns out it’s great for mom’s weight too. Breastfeeding burns around 500 calories a day! It’s an easy way for quick post pregnancy weight loss.

2. Drinking lots of water. Drink water and drink it often. This is going to give you the energy that you need to keep going and it will also be healthy for the baby if we are breast-feeding.

3. Get your body moving. Even though you are sleep deprived and may not fell like it, exercising can help you elevate your mood (and prevent that baby blues), as well as keep your weight down. Even if it’s just walking – it’s important to do it on a regular basis. Put on your walking shoes and your baby in a stroller go for a tour around the block. Your baby is going to love going for a walk and mom is going to get the exercise, the fresh air, and – weather permitting – some vitamin D that she needs to give her enough energy to take care of her family. Walking can slowly turn into running when you feel up to it. Also, while playing with our child on the floor, why not spend a few minutes doing some simple floor exercises for the abs and arms.

4. Drinking green smoothies. Let’s face it, who has the time to fix healthy meals – chop salads, prepare healthy soups, fresh juices, etc. – when we have a newborn in our house, and are hardly getting any sleep? Green smoothies are probably the fastest snack or meal-replacement that you can get – just blend some fresh fruits and greens together with a cup of water for a quick fix. Don’t let the color scare you off! Green smoothies are delicious and loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. Your baby will love them too, once they start eating solid foods!

5. Remove all junk food in the house!Don’t buy processed foods and don’t keep cakes or biscuits in the house even if they are just for visitors. Replace the junk food with healthy snacks. This is an important habit to establish for the future of your family. Your baby will start eating solids before you know it, and, trust me, you don’t want all the junk food in the house when your toddler starts having regular food.

6. Eat smaller portions. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you will experience faster results if you limit your portion size. While you can pretty much eat as much as you want of fresh fruits and vegetables (mostly raw), everything else needs to be downsized.

The important thing is not to worry about your weight after pregnancy too much. After all, you have a baby to look after and that is more than enough to think about for the time being! Many women still look like they are pregnant after birth – I know I did, for at least a couple of weeks. Wait until around six weeks to even think about losing weight. Pregnancy takes a lot out of your body and it needs time to recover.
